Introducing a youth wage: how to start

A youth wage (Swiss: Jugendlohn) means: instead of separate pocket-money amounts, your kid receives a fixed monthly sum and takes responsibility for certain expenses such as clothes, phone and leisure. Sackgeld adds the second half: the sum is not transferred, it is earned.

From what age?

From about 12, once your kid can hold a budget over several weeks. The calculator starts at 12 because below that the household positions (cooking, laundry for everyone, dishwasher) do not fit the age.

The older the kid, the more expenses move into the wage: clothes at 15, public transport and the hairdresser at 17.

How much?

First decide what the amount should cover. The calculator suggests a monthly sum and spreads it over weekly positions. The exact number matters less than the fact that both sides agree on it in advance.

With Sackgeld the amount is a maximum: do every position and you get there; do less and you get less. No renegotiation on Sunday.

The first week

Sit down together and go through the positions: what belongs to them, what a finished room looks like, when the kitchen counts as clean. In Sackgeld that text sits next to every position.

Print the contract and both sign it. Then your kid reports the first task with a photo, you confirm with one tap, and the first weekly report arrives on Sunday evening.

Expect discussions about details in week 1. From week 3 it gets quiet, because the report leads the discussion, not you.
